My son had inherited my love for everything craft, so he's always super excited when we get to do crafts together. We decided on Salt Dough Ornaments this time and they came out pretty good. I googled the recipe and came up with a few variations. Some of the batches were huge so I skipped past those and came up with this:- Preheat oven to 225°
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1/2 cup water
Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl. Your mixture should resemble pie crust dough and shouldn't stick to your hands. If you find your dough is a little sticky, mix in a little flour (like 1Tbsp at a time) until your dough is the right consistency.
When your dough is fully mixed, roll it out on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper into the shape you want. We made ours into hearts. Your shape should be kinda thick because you don't want to push a hole into the dough when you make your handprints.
Lay your hand flat on the dough and give it enough pressure to sink in part of the way but not all the way through. Take your child's hand and press on top of yours. You can either have it inside your handprint or you can have it crossing yours. Last year we made one where J's hand was inside mine and this time we decided on doing the cross way. Both ways look awesome, so it's up to you.
Slide your cookie sheet into the oven and check on it after 2 hours. If it's still a little squishy then it needs to cook longer. Give it another 20 minutes and check again. You want to make sure your ornaments are completely hardened so they don't end up bending or molding. Let cool on a wire rack when they're done in the oven.
When they're finished cooling, you can paint them! I used acrylic paint I got at the dollar store and it worked out pretty awesome. I painted my handprint one color and then J's a contrasting color so they stood out. I'm pretty satisfied with how they turned out and am thinking about giving them as gifts to the grandparents for Christmas.
